Equity-librium
Developed by Carol Cabrera, Kurt Schwartz & Julio Zuniga
Humanities, Physics & Spanish
Essential Question:
* What traits and behaviors do we to have and display in order to create a more equitable world?
* Where from/how do we get our moral and ethical values and how do they inform the work we do in the world?
* How can we use the physics concept of forces to represent equity in the world?
* How can the language of mathematics describe balance in the world?
* Why is it important to have information available in a second language?
Project Overview: Learners will ponder the question: What traits and behaviors do we have to have and display in order to create a more equitable world? Through readings and discussions, learners will create a mobile about one trait or behavior that is necessary for equity to thrive. The mobile will include 3 symbols to represent the trait or behavior, 3 symbols for 3 people (historical, local, national, international, fiction, etc.) who exemplify the behavior, and 3 questions for viewers to think about as they view the piece. Learners will write an accompanying artist statement for their mobile. Some portion of this statement must be also available in Spanish.
Why This Matters: If we believe that everyone has the potential for greatness, then we must also want to ensure that every person is nurtured to achieve greatness. This means that we have to create an environment where everyone can explore their own identities, passions and curiosities; an environment where everyone can access what they need to fulfill their dreams and realize their life’s vision. All of us have our own individual strengths and talents. This means we all have our own individual needs in our community and our world. The focus of this project is to figure out what traits and behaviors we need as a community in order to achieve equity. We will look at how we successfully are equitable in a community and we will ask questions to push our thinking to create a more equitable world.
We will take all of the final mobiles and display them at Oceanside Harbor Days. We will also bring them back to display outside of our classrooms as reminders of the behaviors we need all year to sustain an equitable classroom. This broader exploration of important societal norms for equity will translate into the expected norms and behaviors of our classroom community.
